Jason Kingsley, Set Technician

"Pulling a job off—taking a bunch of raw materials, adding a ton of energy, and creating something from nothing—is intensely satisfying. And Dremel tools are crucial to our process."

Really, I’m a highly motivated creative problem solver. I run a Scene Shop in Chicago where we translate visions into reality. I consult with theater directors and designers who require set constructions that work harmoniously with their productions.

We modify, refurbish, and build entire sets and set pieces that are, ideally, invisible to an audience—what we construct should be seamless with the actors and performance. A person watching shouldn’t notice that a “set” is even there.

Take our Dremel tools away, and we wouldn’t reach our goals—at least not as quickly. There is a lot of finesse work involved in the details of what we do, and Dremel tools are flexible and powerful enough to get it done. And we save time not having to dig out some of the bulky traditional tools.

Dremel products are lifesavers. They speed up our process and pose little risk to the materials we work with. Like, when we are repainting an expensive mannequin for a highend retail company, we need a tool that won’t damage it when we remove the old paint. And the Dremel rotary tool is the perfect tool for the job. For our theater set projects, Dremel tools mean even more. On any given day we’ll:
  • Remove burs from welded steel posts, frames, you name it
  • Carve, plane and cut wood that requires a delicate touch
  • Polish sword handles and other metal pieces for a set
  • Distress various wooden props to create the sense of weathering
What’s cool about Dremel tools?
That’s an easy one—they’re:
  • Flexible – I can work on areas I couldn’t reach with larger, more traditional hand tools
  • Small and lightweight – I can take them wherever I want to work
  • Speed Efficient – Good luck sanding a delicate prop by hand at 35,000 rpm’s
  • Durable – I’ve been using Dremel tools for many years now, and they never break
