Home Solutions: Wooden Chess Board Coat Rack DIY
- DifficultyEasy
Creating a unique coat rack can be a fun and rewarding project. By repurposing an old chess set, you can craft a stylish and functional piece for your home. Follow these steps to make your own chess coat rack.
Source Your Materials and Utilities
Visit a local thrift shop or second-hand store to purchase an old chess game. Look for a set with sturdy, well-crafted pieces and a wooden or hardboard chessboard. You will need a Dremel Lite, drill accessory, a screwdriver and screws.
Prepare the Chess Pieces and Board
Use the Dremel Lite with a drill accessory to make small holes in the center of each chess pawn. Be careful to drill straight and centered to ensure the pieces will align properly on the board. Drill corresponding holes in the chessboard where you want to attach the pawns. Measure and mark these spots to ensure even spacing and alignment.
Assemble the Coat Rack
Insert screws through the holes from the backside of the chessboard. Make sure they are securely fastened but not protruding through the front. Align each pawn with its corresponding screw on the front side of the board. Use a screwdriver to attach the pawns to the board by screwing them onto the exposed screws. Ensure each pawn is tightly secured and can support the weight of coats and other items.
Mount the Chess Coat Rack
Fix the screws to the back of the chessboard. These will help you mount the board securely to the wall. Choose a suitable location on your wall and fix and press the chessboard firmly against it, ensuring the screws bond well. Double-check that the board is level and secure.
Final Touches
Gently tug on each pawn to make sure they are firmly attached and can support the weight of items you intend to hang. Your chess coat rack is now ready to be used. Hang coats, hats, bags, and other items on the pawns, and enjoy your unique and stylish creation.
By following these steps, you can turn a simple thrift shop find into a functional and decorative piece for your home. This chess coat rack not only adds a personal touch to your space but also repurposes old items in a creative way. Happy crafting!
