Let's Get Started
To reduce the risk of injury user must read instruction manuals for all tools used in this project. Wear eye and respiratory protection. Use clamps to support work piece whenever practical.
Begin by going to Dremel3D.com to download the models, from the “Chess Set Project”
Next you are going to create your Chess Board. Start by clamping the 1' x 2' piece of wood to a table. Then cut the wood into 8 strips, all 2 inches wide, using your Dremel Multi-Saw and wood cutting wheel. Sand down the cut ends of the wood so they are smooth. Paint 4 of the strips black, and keep 4 neutral or paint white.
Carefully edge-glue the 8 strips together, keeping the ends aligned and alternating between black and white. Once the glue has dried, true-up one end by crosscutting the assembled panel.
Next, cutting the opposite direction you initially cut the strips of wood, slice the board into 8 2-inch wide strips again. Smooth the cut ends with the sandpaper again. You will now have 8 strips with the alternating colored squares on them.
Now, using the Dremel Multi-Saw, cut what is left of your 1' x 2' piece of lumber in 4 strips, cut picture-frame style (joining corners both at 45 deg angle), to create the frame of the chess board. Two of the sides should be 17" long, and the two other sides should be 14" long. Again, smooth ends with the sandpaper. Stain or paint these outside pieces however you like.
Next, create the base of the board by cutting the plywood to the same proportion of the frame.
Cover your strips and stick to the board one piece at a time. Remember to make sure the colors alternate throughout the board when assembling.
Done! You're now ready to add the chess pieces you created using your Dremel Idea Builder and enjoy a game of chess.
