SKILL LEVEL

I put my Dremel 3D45 to the test and built a 3D printed dress-top out of 3D printed particles, using Dremel translucent PLA (DF70-01) filament. I made it light up using NeoPixels. Now you can do the same! Follow my tutorial.

Let's Get Started

To reduce the risk of injury user must read instruction manuals for all tools used in this project. Wear eye and respiratory protection. Use clamps to support work piece whenever practical.

STEP 1

Prepare your 3D45

First, you need to make sure that you did a little test print to ensure you installed your printer correctly. How to get started? Check https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGBSVOaFj5Y&feature=youtu.be

STEP 2

Glue Application Instruction

It is important to ensure that the 3D45 build platform is covered with Dremel specified glue before each build. A properly maintained glue layer helps parts adhere to the build plate during prints and prevents warping and curling, especially in large prints. You should apply a layer of glue every 1-3 prints. When you apply glue, make sure you apply it to the whole area of the bed where the part will print. Make sure that the build plate is cool before removing it or applying glue. Each time you apply glue, make sure to apply two overlapping layers. You can apply the glue to the perimeter of the print area first (1), and then zigzag up and down while overlapping over the entire area (2). Wait for 10 seconds and then apply another layer zigzagging left to right (3). This ensures a uniform layer over the entire build area. Allow the glue to dry before leveling or starting a print. Preheating the build plate can help speed up this process.

STEP 3

3D Print!

Once you have your printer ready, start printing the .stl on your (Dremel) 3D Printer. The file is attached to this tutorial. The 3D45 software will calculate everything automatically for you, and start the print of multiple particles at once.

STEP 4

Cut off support material

Twist off the support material using pliers, then clean it out using your Dremel tools.

STEP 5

Polish your print!

Use your Dremel polishing rotary tool bit to polish the particles until they are all glossy. I have a Dremel Versa and it worked well to polish the full circular shape of the particle surface.

STEP 6

Add metal rings

Add metal rings to link them all together (while creating flexibility).

STEP 7

Add in some LIGHT!

I added 4 NeoPixel Rings (Adafruit), glowing in blue and magenta. It faded really well through both the geometry, as also through the half translucent material. Making it look very magical. Link to the NeoPixels: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1643

STEP 8

Complete the dress!

In the case of the photoshoot, I created a leather dress underneath it with a V-cut front. And placed the 3D print as top part on top of the dress. Photographer Criss Gomez (IG @chrisgomezphotography) shot the dress with her team.
