Let's Get Started
To reduce the risk of injury user must read instruction manuals for all tools used in this project. Wear eye and respiratory protection. Use clamps to support work piece whenever practical.
Start by marking the placement of your light fixture. Flip the crate over, measure and mark the placement directly in the center of your crate.
Cut out your intended opening for the light fixture using your Dremel rotary tool. Begin by making a pilot hole directly in the center of your marked cut. Next, insert the 561 Multipurpose Cutting Bit into your rotary tool. Set your tool to high speed and make a plunge cut into the mark you have just made.
Next, measure the diameter at the end of your light fixture to determine the size of the opening you need to make. Our fixture was 1 1/2" across. Cutting precise circles with the 4000 is easy, especially when using the Circle Cutter Guide included in your kit! We used the same 561 bit, mounted the Circle Cutter onto our tool, set the diameter to 1 1/2" and began cutting at full speed. Cut in a clockwise direction using consistent, moderate pressure. Tip: To assemble the cutter, unscrew the pivot foot knob and turn the pivot foot over so that the center point is down. Next, remove the nose cap of the 4000 then thread the Guide onto the threaded portion of the tool, turning clockwise until tight (do not over-tighten).
You can use the Multipurpose Cutting bit to carve various shapes or designs along the sides of your crate lamp. We chose to go with a modern look by cutting varying-sized circles along the sides. We traced the circles and used the Circle Cutting Guide with the Multipurpose bit (using the same technique as step 3) to complete our cuts
You may find yourself wanting to clean up the finish of your cuts. We recommend using the EZ407 Sanding band for this application. Switch the Multipurpose accessory with the EZ407 Drum fixed with the sanding band of your choice and you're ready to begin sanding!
We added a wood stain to our crate to give it a final, polished look.
Once your stain dries, thread the lighting fixture through the hole you have cut. Insert your lightbulb from within the crate and secure with the outer ring provided with your bulb.
We replaced our old ceiling fixture with this crate fixture. We removed the old fixture but kept the mounting brackets in place. (Your kit may come with new mounting hooks as ours did). We attached the wires based on the instructions included with the lights and secured the connections with wire nuts. Tip: Before installing the new fixture, turn off your main circuit power.
