How to Make an Easy DIY Star Tree Skirt That Steals the Show

- DifficultyEasy
Introduction
Looking to give your tree that extra “wow” factor? An 8-point star tree skirt is the perfect project - and it’s way easier to make than it looks. With the Dremel Blueprint Portable Saw Station, Dremel Blueprint Multi-Drill and a sanding tool by your side, you can cut, drill, sand with confidence. In just a few simple steps, you’ll create a festive piece that frames your tree beautifully - and makes your holiday setup feel truly complete!
Let's go - step by step
Prep Your Workspace
Clear a large, flat workspace and gather all your tools and materials. Next, secure your plywood sheet to the work surface if needed. Then, set up the Dremel Blueprint Portable Saw Station with proper safety gear (glasses, ear protection, mask).
Rip Cut the Plywood
Rip plywood into six 254mm wide strips (10 inches) along the vertical grain. (these strips determine the height of your collar.)
Straight Cut into Panels
Cross-cut the 254 mm wide strips into eight 152 mm wide rectangular panels (6 inches) using the Dremel Blueprint Portable Saw Station, then cross-cut the remaining strips into eight 171 mm wide panels (6-3/4 inches ≈ 171 mm). You’ll need 16 pieces total – 8 for each half of the star.
Bevel Cut Edges
Using the Dremel Blueprint Portable Saw Station, bevel one long edge of each panel to 22.5° (to form the inner angles of the star). The outer angles are formed using a basic butt joint. Make sure bevels are mirrored as needed to ensure symmetry.
Assemble Each Star Half
Lay out 8 panels per star half, arranging the bevels to form a half-star, then apply wood glue to each joint. Clamp and secure each piece:
Option 1: Brad nail from the backside to hold while drying.
Option 2: Drill a pilot hole, then use finishing screws for clean attachment, using the Dremel Blueprint Multi-Drill.
Allow glue to set fully.
Sand Smooth
Use your Dremel Blueprint MM12V Project Multi-Tool (launching in 2026) with a sanding attachment - or hand-sand - to smooth all edges and bevels. Round any sharp corners if desired, fill seams with wood filler, then sand until flush.
A hint: This versatile Mulit-Tool can cut, sand, scrape, and remove grout with a single and fast swap of a blade, making it your go-to for every stage of the project.
Apply Finish
Clean off sanding dust, then prep surface by applying primer, if needed. Apply your chosen finish (e.g., gold paint, stain, or decorative carving). Finally, allow to dry completely according to product instructions.
Assemble Around Tree
Bring the two collar halves together around your tree base. You can recess magnets into each half of the star or add hoop and loop tape to keep the tree skirt secured.
More Than a Tree Skirt
The best part? You can bring it out year after year, knowing you built it yourself. Your 8-point star collar is bold and eye-catching, which makes it perfect for more than just hiding a tree stand. Here are a few smart alternatives:
Porch Display: Place it at your front entrance with a small potted tree or lanterns inside.
Gift Display Base: Use it indoors as a stage for wrapped presents. The star shape frames gifts beautifully and makes them part of the décor.
Outdoor Planter Wrap: Fit it around a big festive planter on your patio for a geometric, modern touch.
Fireplace Accent: Place it at the base of your mantel, either with logs inside or as a glowing centerpiece with LED lights.
