Step by Step Guide Build a Cozy DIY Cat House
- DifficultyEasy
Introduction
Create a climbing tower that will keep your cat entertained all year long while doubling as a stylish piece of modern art for your home!
Step By Step Instructions
Planning Your Design
To kickstart our DIY cat house project, let's gather the essential materials. Head over to your local DIY store and procure 6 wooden planks tailored to the following dimensions: an upper plank measuring 42.5x40cm, two side planks measuring 40x39.5cm each, a front plank sized at 40x40cm, a back plank measuring 38.5x39.5cm, and finally, an inner plank measuring 38x40.5cm. These precise measurements are crucial for ensuring that our cat house will come together seamlessly. Once you have your planks ready, we can move on to the next step of our crafting adventure.
Trace and Cut the Tower Design
Begin by tracing your cat tower design onto the 3/4" sanded plywood. Be sure to create two identical pieces for the sides, and make the base 6" wider and 12" longer than the other pieces for added stability.Once the circle is marked, use the Dremel Saw-Max with the SM500 Wheel, cut out the traced pieces from the plywood. Follow the marked lines carefully, and use the tool's plunge-cut feature to cut into the material smoothly.
Create Curved Corners & Sand The Wood
To add curved edges to your tower, use a cordless drill with a 2 1/2" hole saw to make cut-outs in each corner. Connect the cut-outs using the Saw-Max tool, and notch off the corners with angled cuts.
With the Dremel Multi-Max set to mid or high speed and equipped with MM70W sandpaper, smooth both the inside and outside edges of the tower. To achieve a rounded effect or fix imperfections, use a coarser grit sandpaper.
Assembling the Planks
Arrange all the cut-out pieces and align them for assembly. Mark the locations for pilot holes to ensure precise assembly in the next step.
Reinforcing the Structure
Using a drill or the Dremel Rotary Tool with the 150 Drill Bit, make pilot holes to prevent wood splitting during assembly. Then, attach the base to the backing using 2 1/2" screws. Attach the base to the sides of the structure using 2 1/2" screws for stability.
Attach the First Landing
Secure the first "landing" piece to the tower using 1" screws. Align the opposite side pieces and secure them to the tower using clamps to ensure level alignment. Fasten them using 1" screws.
Build the Side Structure
Align the opposite side pieces and secure them to the tower using clamps to ensure level alignment. Fasten them using 1" screws.
Add Steps and Landings
Alternate between attaching "landing" and side pieces, drilling them into place to complete the tower's structure.
Adding a Splash of Colour
Stain or paint the tower to your desired finish and let it dry completely. Meanwhile, cut adhesive-backed carpet squares to fit each landing using a Dremel MM30 with a 430 Hook Blade.
Final result
Once the tower is dry, peel the adhesive backing from the carpet squares and stick them to each landing for extra grip and comfort for your cat.
To reduce the risk of injury user must read instruction manuals for all tools used in this project. Wear eye and respiratory protection. Use clamps to support work piece whenever practical.
