Raven at Heron & Lamb showed us how to transform soft stone like quartz into a treasured piece of jewelry! To begin, she secured a thin Dremel Drill Bit into her Dremel FortiFlex tool. While holding the piece of quartz secure in her pliers & against her workbench, she slowly drilled into the top of the quartz. She recommends working slowly so as to not crack the stone & stopping frequently to check the progress of the hole. Tip: Where to find quartz? We found some available at several online Jewelry Supply outlets simply by searching for “Jewelry Making Quartz”. You may also find some at your local craft & hobby store.

Next, she threaded jewelers wire through the hole she made in step 1 to create a loop which she strung onto a necklace chain. You can also use the same process using a shorter chain or stringing materials if you choose to make a bracelet instead.

Raven also gave us a few more tips for personalizing jewelry for a gift! She inserted a Silicon Carbide Stone into her FortiFlex tool & using light strokes, completed initials into stones. She suggested stringing the stones onto a necklace, bracelet or adhering them to a ring as well!

Instead of making a new piece from scratch, Raven suggested a gift idea of finding a piece of unique costume jewelry at a local thrift shop and using your favorite Dremel tool to give it a new shine! If your jewelry is plated as costume jewelry is, we do not recommend using polishing compound. Set your tool to a low speed for this application, working slowly to remove the grime. For our particularly grimy piece, we chose to use the 512E EZ Lock Abrasive Buff which added shine & kept the piece’s unique weathered look.
