Portable Horseshoe Pit

Mount the US500 Carbide Wood Cutting Wheel onto your Dremel Ultra-Saw tool. Measure and mark the 3/4" plywood to 4' x 4'. Clamp the wood and cut along your marks. Note that our instructions are for one horseshoe pit. If you'd like to create more than one, adjust the supplies as needed and complete each of these steps for the additional pits.

Measure and mark the 4" PVC so that there are two 42" lengths and a 30" length. Using the Ultra-Saw and US500 wheel cut through the PVC along these marks to create three separate tubes of PVC. Fit your cut pieces into the two 90 degree PVC elbow fittings to form the "U" structure of the horseshoe pit frame. When fitting the tubes into the elbows make the 30" piece of PVC the centerpiece and have the two 42" pieces serve as the sides.

Add rope handles to make the horseshoe pit conveniently portable. Using a drill and 1" hole saw or spade bit create a pair of holes along two parallel sides of the plywood base. We spaced the holes comprising each pair 6" from each other and centered each pair along the outer edges of the sides. Note that you'd eventually like the rope handles to be on the outside of the PVC "U" frame. For this reason it can be helpful to lay the PVC frame onto the plywood base to assist in determining where to place the holes for your rope handles. Once the holes have been created, feed a 2' piece of rope through each pair of and tie off the ends to create each rope handle.

Now we will secure the PVC horseshoe pit frame onto the plywood. Begin by positioning the PVC frame onto the plywood base so that it is centered and the rope handles are orientated on each side of the "U" shape. Designate two points on each 42" side and one point on the 30" center piece of the PVC frame where bolts will be used to connect it to the plywood. Plunge through these points on the PVC and plywood using a drill and 1/2" drill bit. Feed 6" carriage bolts up through these five holes and use a wrench to fasten 1/2" washers and 1/2" nuts on the ends of the bolts.

Finally, drill a hole for the horseshoe stake. Using your drill and 1" hole saw or spade bit from Step 3, plunge through a point at the center of the plywood base. When making use of your new portable horseshoe pit, place it in the desired location and feed the stake through the drilled hole and into the ground. Pour some sand on the surface of the plywood as a finishing touch.
