Reduce Waste with a Compost Bin
- DifficultyHard
Reduce waste and fertilize your garden with a compost bin. Get tips on composting and start enriching your garden with Dremel.
Preparing the Corner Posts
To begin constructing your compost bin, start by preparing the corner posts. This involves cutting down your pickets into eight 24-inch pieces. Using a SM500 Wood and Plastic wheel mounted on your SM20 tool, carefully cut along the marked lines. This will create the necessary posts for the structure.
Smoothing the Edges
Next, remove the sharp edges from the cut pieces. This step ensures that your bin is safe to handle and gives it a more finished look. Use your SM20 tool to follow the notch and smooth out the edges.
Assembling the Corner Posts
With the corner pieces cut and smoothed, it’s time to assemble them into four L-shaped posts. Clamp two pieces together to form each "L," then drill pilot holes using a 150 drill bit attached to your Dremel 4200 tool. Secure the pieces with 2-1/2" wood screws, creating sturdy posts that will anchor your bin.
Cutting Slats for the Bin Sides
Now, focus on creating the slats for the sides of your bin. Depending on the spacing you desire, cut the pickets into 30-inch pieces. For a bin with five slats per side, you’ll need to cut a total of 20 pieces. Use your SM20 tool to make precise cuts along your marked lines.
Constructing the Bin Sides
Once your slats are ready, begin assembling the sides of the bin. Secure five slats between two corner posts for each side. Leave space on the edges to ensure that the front and back walls fit snugly.
Building the Front and Back Panels
Next, attach five slats to the corner posts to form the back panel of the bin. When constructing the front panel, only attach the bottom two slats, reserving the remaining three for later steps.
Adding Support with Cleats
To support the bottom platform of the bin, install cedar cleats along the inside of the walls. Measure and cut four 30-inch cleats, then secure them in place using finishing nails. This will provide a solid foundation for the base of your bin.
Creating the Bin’s Base
With the cleats in place, cut the slats for the base. Measure and cut seven 29-inch slats, spacing them about 1/8" apart. Test each slat for fit and then secure them by hammering into place.
Lining the Bin with Chicken Wire
To prevent debris from falling out, line the interior of the bin with chicken wire. Cut the wire to size and attach it using staples. If needed, use the shield attachment on your Dremel 4200 tool for added safety while cutting.
Constructing the Hinged Lid
Finally, create the hinged lid for your compost bin. Cut 1x3 cedar slats into 30-inch pieces and join them using cleats to form the lid. Attach the slats together, leaving space in the center for the hinges. Once the lid halves are assembled, secure them to a center rail and attach the hinges.
Completing the Compost Bin
With the lid attached, secure the center rail to the top of your bin. Ensure everything is tightly fastened, and your compost bin is now complete and ready for use!
