This up-cycled chair bench is a relaxing place to sit and enjoy a summer afternoon, and can be uniquely upholstered to match any room in the house.

Dremel Ultra-Saw used to cut 7 pieces of Luan plywood

Manipulate the measurements to what fits your needs

First, to create this 6-cubby shelving unit, use the Dremel Ultra-Saw to cut 7 pieces of Luan plywood into the following dimensions and quantities: • 3 pieces of wood at 16" x 44" • 2 pieces of wood at 16" x 30 ½" • 2 pieces of wood at 16" x 29" Tip: Our shelving unit is 45 ½” x 30 ½” but manipulate the measurements to what fits your needs.

Make cuts equal to the width of the boards that will hold the partitions

Repeat this process by making one cut in the individual partition pieces

To get a clean end for the cut use an Oscillating Saw with the same blade size

Next, you are going to create the interior dividers. Start by creating the 3/4" slots. Measure and mark with a pencil at the 3/4" x 8" spot, equally spaced in one of the 16” x 44” pieces and both of the 16” x 29” pieces of wood created in step 1. There will only be 1 cutout in the smaller pieces of wood, and 2 total cutouts in the larger piece of wood. Refer to image 3.a. Then, use the Ultra-Saw to cut the long cuts, and finish the slot by crosscutting with the Multi-Max and 3/4" wood blade.

Assemble the cubbies by inserting corresponding pieces into the slots you cut

Stand up the larger piece of plywood with slots in them and assemble by sliding the 2 smaller pieces of wood into the larger piece.

Drill holes for screws on all sides of the cubbies to ensure durability

Drill countersink holes with a #10 countersink bit, 3/8” from the ends on the two 16” x 30 ½” boards. We placed 4 screws evenly spread across.

Add wood glue where the pieces meet and assemble the side and top pieces

Now glue the ends of the wood to the top and bottom of the shelf. Secure all ends by anchoring 3/8” screws into the top and bottom of the shelf.

Drill screws into the predilled holes to complete the cubbie

Flip shelf so it is now sitting upright. Repeat drilling the countersink holes and screws to secure the interior of the cubbies to the top, bottom and sides.

Sand all the corners to ensure a smooth finish and to remove splinters

Smooth the edges so they are slightly rounded with the Multi-Max and sanding pad. Stain and paint as desired. Place baskets inside the cubby holes to add even more storage with style.
